New in Town

One of my favorite promenades is across Tiergarten and down to the Spree-Ufer, along the Government District. It is also one of those areas in Berlin which went from wasteland to boom-town, and all in a jiffy. More than that, that part of Berlin is still being developed and new buildings are going up on a constant basis.

Here are some of them (please click on each image to enlarge):

The MLP Building (the one behind is the Total Tower), designed by Barkow & Leibinger

Ministry of Research and Education, architects: Heinle, Wischer & Partner

Crown Prince Bridge, architect: Santiago Calatrava

Ministry of the Interior, architects: Thomas Müller & Ivan Reimann

Spree-Eck Building, architects: Triet & Tietjen

Marie-Elisabeth Lüders Building, architect: Stefan Braunfels

YOO Building, architects: Eike Becker & Philippe Starck.

Note: The statue of Brecht in front of the building. I'm sure poor old Brecht would turn in his grave if he knew that he's now seated next to one of Berlin's most expensive and most ostentatiously luxurious apartment buildings!

Chancellery, architects: Charlotte Frank & Axel Schultes

Humboldt Harbor Nr. 1, architect: Jürgen Engel

Developed by the Dutch real estate group OVG, this is supposed to be Berlin's 'most sustainable office building'

Living 108, architects: Axthelm & Sauter

House of the Future, architects: Richter & Musikowski

To be completed next year, this is meant to become a showcase for German technology and know-how (... I take it, neither the BER airport, nor the State Opera disaster, let alone the much delayed extension of Line 5, will in any way be mentioned ...) ...
